Lance was a fun but quiet opponent. We had a fun game and enjoyed the way he was schooling me on how to keep terminators from getting grouped up where plasma cannon could do lots of damage. We went a full 7 rounds and in the end I only had a Rhino left while Lance had 1 units, his HQ and 1 Devastator squad member left alive. Lose 0-3

Michael was a fun player and allowed me to take advantage of some early mistakes he made moving his Dreadnought in the wrong directions and I was able to destroy both of them with my obliterators. After a long 7 turn game I managed a 2-1 victory.

Antony just plan schooled me in this game. At the top of turn 3 I was down to 1 Oblit and 4 Plague Marines. Antony was a fun opponent and we had a good 25 minute game. After that I took Sara (my wife) out for dinner and enjoyed the rest of my evening. Lose 0-3

Return of the Galactic Cup

Our club, Powers of the North, will be hosting a year long league. Any are welcome to come and play. We play on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 9am till 5pm at the Cotati Vet's Hall.

Rules & Regs for the Galactic Cup

The Galactic Cup will be a year long league that anyone can play in. Only games at the vet's count.

Each month I will set the points for each army type (40K & Fantasy). These points are going to reflect any up coming tournament events so in February I've set the points at 1750 for 40K as the Bay Area Open is just 3 weeks later and I've set Fantasy at 2000 as the CoC is 1 week after the vet's.

When you arrive at the vets you should have one list already set and printed for each of your armies.

If you do not have both a Fantasy & 40K army that is not a problem, you can just play with the one you have.

Once you play a game turn in results with Doc.

Army restrictions: All current Codex & Army books are legal including the PDF for the S.O.B.'s. Any other White Dwarf or on-line PDF's are not legal until cleared by a committee of 72 vestal virgins.
40K: No other restrictions
Fantasy: No Special Characters & No Folding Fortress

When we gather at the vet's you can pick an opponent or we can roll off to see who plays who.

Missions:
Unless both opponents agree on a set mission, all missions should be rolled out of the book. The one exception is the Fortress mission in the Fantasy rule book. If this mission is rolled just re-roll.

It is permissible for two players to set up a "special" game that is just between them. If this is the case you can have any points use any mission and or Special Characters & Folding Fortress as long as you both completely agree on them.

Scoring:
For each game wins, lose & draw is figured as you would with information from the rule book.

League Results:
As the vet's is a gathering place for many players of different style of games we understand that some players can only play once in a while. Here is our attempt to balance our league games.

Primary Players & Secondary Players:
At the end of the league (the December Vet's) we will calculate all the games.
To be a Primary Player you will need to play at least half the number of games that the player with the most games played that year.
Example: Dave plays 22 games this year and has the most of any player. You will need to have played at least 11 games to be counted as a Primary Player.
Also, to be a Primary Player you will need to play against at least 75% (round up) of the other active Primary Players.
All other players will be called Secondary Players.

Each win is worth 2 points, Draw is worth 1 point and a lose is worth 0.

At the end of the league all wins of a Primary Player over another Primary Player will earn 1 bonus point to the winner players total.

Your total score will be added up and divided by the number of games you have played. This average will determine the League Champion & League Man-at-arms. The League Champion is the Primary Player with the highest average and the League Man-at-arms will be the Secondary Player with the highest average.

Fun time at Battle Bunker

Yesterday I and another Powers of the North club member Antony went to Battle Bunker games in Antioch for a 40K tournament.

This tournament was run using the missions for the Bay Area Open so it was a good opportunity to test out new ideas and get a handle on the best way to fight them.

I took my new Black Templar army, this is not the one I will be taking to the Bay Area Open but I really wanted to give them a spin.

Game #1 vs. Fate weaver Daemons, Dan

I’ve never faced Fate Weaver before but I’ve read a lot about how to deal with it and to tell the truth I didn’t think my army could. That being said I kept all my units close to each other and awaited that round 1 drop with FW and 4 other Daemon Princes. My opponents scatter dice were very, very unkind to him as FW and the others scatter very far apart. This left me the great opportunity to charger FW with one of my Lightning Claw units and not worry about getting hit in the next round by 2 or the other monstrous creatures. In the round I charged I managed to get two wounds on the FW and took it out on the 2nd round of combat. The two LRC did their job by taking out a DP each while the Lascannons took pot shots at the others.
After that as the daemons came in, again my opponent was having bad luck with his scatter, I was able to take out unit after unit with my LRC shooting and Lightning Claw attacks.
We went to round 6 before but the game was done and I took the 3-0 victory. My opponent was very good natured and I hope I gave him a good game.

Game #2 vs. Necrons, Nick (Tasty Taste)

Nick had 3 Monoliths, 2 eight bug swarm units, 3 ten man Immortal unit and the StormLord with a bunch of other lords & crypt’s to put into the Immortal Units.
The first thing I made clear to myself is that Malta Weapons still do 2 dice penetration if close enough to the Monoliths.
This game saw lots and lots of necron shooting at my LRC and the weathered the onslaught incredible well. Both tanks absorbed dozens of hits taking the pressure off the terminators. Also nick’s army really didn’t have an answer to killing terminators except mass shots. In the end I managed to take out all his ground units and immobilize 2 Monoliths and destroy the third one. My EC beat the Stormlord in HTH combat twice. Win 3-0

Game #3 vs. Imperial Guard, Jeremy

Jeremy’s army had a command squad and 4 veteran squads in chimeras, 2 hell hounds in a squad, 2 vendettas and a LR battle tank. (I feel as if I’m missing something there, but that is what I recall at this time)

This was not going to be an easy fight and it wasn’t. We slugged this one out back and forth and Jeremy kept the pressure up with multiple Lascannons and Melti guns, Flamers and Scatter Lasers. I lose one of my LRC in round 2 and the other was immobilized in round 4. Both terminator units took out a unit each but paid the untimit price by round 3. My EC was unable to charge through cover to the Psyker squad (ah that was the unit I was forgetting) and got shot down in round 4.

At the end of round 5 I was beat as Jeremy had 1 of his camps and an objective and my camp & objective was being contested by a hell hound tank. I was also down by 1 kill point. We rolled and a round 6 was in play. Jeremy was unable to kill another unit in his part of round 6 but my Marshal finished off a unit in HTH (2nd round of combat) and headed for my opponents camp. In my turn I tried to destroy the Hell Hound by Lascannon and Krak grenades but was only able to stun it.

I made the error of shooting with my LRC at the unit my Marshal was going to charge killing enough models so I needed a 6 on the move through cover roll and I only got a 5.

The game ended and Jeremy wins 2-0 and takes the tournament. I did come in 2nd.

We had 8 players and I was a very fun day.

Happy New Year! War Game like it's the end of the world

New Years evening and I was at a party with my wife and 3 of our kids. We all played games till the magic hour then went home beat tired.

I got in 3 games of 7 Wounders. took 1st twice and a tie for 1st the last game (lossing the tie breaker).

On the Warhammer side of life:

Black Templar:
I've completted both Land Raider Crusaders and I'm currently working on my last 5 Terminators. After that I have six Heavy Weapon Marines to do, 10 Neophyts and three Razorbacks then they will be all done.

My son got a new camera for Chistmas so I can use that to start taking pictures. so I hope to do some of that on Monday.

First tournament for me in 2012 will be on Sunday, January 8 at Battle Bunker Games in Antioch CA. Still thinking the list over.

Since 2007 I started keeping track of what army’s I play and how well I do in a tournament environment. I try to track each tournament is there are at least 8 players and at least 3 games.

Took the new Black Templar army to Battle Bunker Games Sunday for a 1850 point 40K tournament. After going 1-2 in three games I was talking with my last opponent and he said that my list "looked to large" and can I see it, so I handed over my Army Builder list and he looked it over and said, "Did you check the math?"

No I hadn't. And there it was in all its glory. My Jump Pack unit 10 man strong should be 22 points each + 2 for melti bombs + 15 for Storm Shields = 39 points each for a grand total of 270?!?! Damn I was playing with an extra 120 points in my army and still came within 1 wound of beig tabled twice.

Lessons: Check AB math and I need to figre out a better BT list.

December 7, 2002

On this day in history we bought our current home. With me, my wife Sara, two young girls and having my parents move in with us.

It was an interesting time learning to live with my parents again. Over the years we have had some major ups and downs.

The ups: The adoption of our sons Chris & Nate as well as another daughter Melinda. We started Foster care and currently we have a wounderful boy named Joseph. Our oldest (Ariel) started College this year and we are seeing all our children grow and mature.

The downs: My parents have passed away over this time, but they were surrouned by Grandkids with lots of love for them.

After 9 full years we are looking forword to all our kids completting High School (in 8 years) and then Sara and I can travel the country in retierment. These are of course subject to change as all of life is, but I look back on the lst 9 years and smile.

No Tournament this weekend

Hey Y'all

Well I was unable to attiend the last CoC of the year so I was unable to retain my best overall standings from last year. In reality I was already out of the running, but I think I still could have scored in the top 3, I'll have to see how I finnished when yesterdays results are posted.

I did manage to have a fun day of games with my friend here at our home. As a group we track each games and what place each player is in over the year. This year I placed 4th out of the 5 of us who make up to core of our group.

My Black Templar army is almost done being assembled. I need only 5 more terminators to have all my troops done. I still have 3 Land Raiders & 3 Razorbacks to do later, but those are not needed for what I want to start with.

I hope to take them to the Battle Bunker next Sunday for a test drive before I start painting them.

Also bought all my Blood Angel models I need, I should have them in 2 weeks to start assembling them.

Team Tournament Victory

Saturday Loren and I headed up to Great Escape Games for a Warhammer Fantasy team tournament. I had Night Goblins and he had WOC.

We managed to defeated Vampire Counts and Orc & Goblins in the first round.

Barley managed to eke out a win vs. Ogre Kingdoms and Empire. This round saw my 12 fanatics getting triggered by a Steam Tank to do 4 wounds on the Tank and then a unit of Night Goblins took 5 more rounds of combat to destroy that Steam Tank.

And then round three we beat an Orc & Goblin + Orc & Goblin list for the overall victory. This last game did have the unfortunate part that one of our opponents had to leave, leaving our other opponent to run the entire army himself, and he wasn’t familiar with how best to use his troops.

Each game was fun in its own way and we look forward to defending out title next time.

Next up, 2,999 point Fantasy tournament at Great Escape Games this Saturday.

Necrons vs Chaos Space Marines

So game #2 of the East Bay league saw my Nurgle Marines go up against Alex's Necron. I think I had the upper hand most of the game, but that darn shooty attack the Storm Lord has can change the game with one roll of the dice. That one attack took out 8 of 9 plague marines and 2 oblits.

In the end it was a very fun game, not counting my terminators deep striking off table to end up in the warp.

Next up is a Fantasy team tournament I'll be going to with my friend Loren.

Modeling Idea

So as I’m working on the Knights Templar army I’ve gotten to the point of the Emperors Champion. My current idea is a kneeling character with his sword point down and head bowed as if he is reciting his vows to the Emperor.

I don’t like the GW model of the EC so I’d like to work one out.

Legion of Plague & Pestilance

I was unable to get my Black Templar army ready for today’s tournament so I took out the Old Nurgle Space Marines for a spin. I've not used them in a tournament in almost 3 years.

Sorc w/ Lash Whip

3x Nurgle Marines units (9 man units) w/ Power Fist, 2x Melta, Rhino

2x Oblits (3 man units)

Game one vs. Mike's Dark Eldar, Dawn of War, Kill Points.

A Classic fast army vs. a slow tough army. Things looked good early as Mike was having a hard time with his dice, but later in the game my dice turned down and his turned way up. In the end it was a close game I lost 7-5. Mike went on to place 1st overall.

Game two vs. Reece and his CSM Khorn list, Pitched Battle, Capture & Control. A hard fought game that went the full 7 round, I was lucky enough that it did go 7 full rounds as that was the turn that I managed to win holding 1-0 objectives.

Game three vs. Jason and his Grey Knights, Spearhead, Seize Ground.
Jason had six 5 man units in Razorbacks and 1 dread. As he jumped out of his tanks I would lash them forward and shot them to a man. In the end he did a lot of damage to me and I only had one 4 man unit left at the end of turn 5, but the game ended there so I won 1-0 on objectives.

Game four vs. Frankie with his Nurgle CSM list, Spearhead, Kill Points.
With Nurgle on Nurgle action I chose to DS my two oblit squad and sit back in cover while he charged forward. This gave me beneficial shooting rounds and the DSing Oblits each took out almost entire units of Nurgle (7 man units) with TL plasma Guns. In the end I was able to win 7-4.

Took 2nd overall and best looking army.

Next up will be Day 1 of the Powers of the North Fantasy not so Grand Tournament on November 19. Game on!

Round 1, Victory

I was able to defeat my Round 1 opponent this week. He had Blood Angels and I took my Imperial Guard. Spearhead set up using Kill Points. At the end of round 4 I was ahead 6-0, The game ended after round 5 and I held a 7-4 lead for the win.

Daniel was a fun opponent and I look forward to many more games against him.

Next up; Battle Bunker Games 1500 point 40K tournament this Sunday.

New Week, New Fun I hope

After a weekend of fun and enjoyment it's back to WARHAMMER 40K.

I'm working at a fevered pace to see if I can get my Black Templar army built by Sundays tournament at Battle Bunker Games. At 1,500 points I'm not going to have the army painted at all, but it will be a good test for my BT army idea. After that I can start painting the Knights Templar!

If I don't get the army done by Sunday I'll be taking my Chaos Space Marines, the Legion of Plague & Pestilence.

This Wednesday I have my first game of the new East Bay 40K league. It will be my IG, Angel One vs. Blood Angels at 1,850 points with the scenario rolled out of the book.

On the family side of life we took all 6 kids to see Puss in Boots. It is a fun flick and I would suggest you'll like it. After lunch I took 3 of the kid out to learn to drive. Oh Joy!

New League

I signed up for a new East Bay 40K League out of Battle Bunker Games in Antioch last night. I'll get to play in 6 games over the next 12 weeks and then a championship game after that (if I make it). This should keep me going during these cold autumn nights.

Painting: I've tossed my starting Black Templar painted models as I just didn't like the way it looked. (If anyone wants a 10 man crusader squad + EC let me know). I'm going to try some test models this weekend to see if I can get the white theme to work a different way.

Army Build: I still need to find some more Warmaster Chaos Dragon Ogres, still need about 15 more. After that I should be able to start work on my Dragon Ogre army for Fantasy.

After That: I have a fun Blood Angels idea.

Next tournament I know I'm going to isn’t till November 26, but there are others that I may get to go to before then, I'll keep you posted.

D&D Night, what a wounderful day

Got to play D&D Saturday with my old mates. Rufus, my Halfling Bard managed to live and make it to fourth level.

I've been a bit too busy to work on models latelt but I hope to have some time soon.

This weekend I'll be at the Flee market at Great Escape Games to sales some games and miniatures I'll not be using.

Next tournament might be the 2nd weekend of November for 40K but that is still up in the air.

Looking forward to the new Necron Codex to be seen in a week or so.

Fantay CoC Aftermath

On Saturday we headed up to Great Escape Games for the 5th Fantasy CoC of the year. I once again took my trusty Night Goblin army.

Game #1 vs. Ogre Kingdoms

Conner was a fun player and his army was mostly assembled. My Fanatics and war machines did their jobs very well and I took a table clearing victory in round 5. Win 20-5

Game #2 vs. Tzeentch Warriors of Chaos

Antony was andother fun player, but after 2 turns I thought I was done. So I just played out the game in good humor but as the turns rolled on my War Machines started to hit very well and Antony started to fail his "look out sir" rolls. At the end of the game I managed to eke out a win, 20-10.

Game #3 vs. Beasts of Chaos.

Henri was another fantastic player of the day. His army was tough but with three units off the table (reserve rolls at start of game) he had a hard time protecting his two giants and they never made contact with me. Much carnage later I had my 3rd victory of the day 20-10.

In the end I took 2nd overall missing 1st by one point. I did screw up my own scoring as after the first game I filed our results wrong and only game myself 15 points and my opponent 10. My own fault.

This weekend is Octoberfist at the vet's with lots of historical games and D&D night. Next tournament may be at the Battle Bunker but I'll have to see how my schedule goes.

Battle Bunker Games Aftermath

Getting back into the swing of rolling better dice I traveled to Antioch at Battle Bunker Games for a 3 game tournament on Sunday.
For those of you who read this drivel of a blog know that I tried a tournament their some months back but no one showed up; not even the employee to open the store.
This time all went very well.
The store: A largish venue with two main rooms. Lots of clutter but they are still getting organized and I think things should come together over the next few months. A LARGE selection of Warhammer stuff along with lots of OOP models for you old school players to buy.
Reece of the No Comp club ran a smooth event. Each round had 3 mission objectives; Primary (worth 3 points), Secondary (worth 2 points) & Tertiary (worth 1 point). The person with the most points at the end of three games was the big winner.
Round 1 vs Space Wolves
My opponent was having a very, very bad dice game. At one point he used a banner to re-roll 1’s during an assault and then rolled 22 dice with 14 two’s and only one 1. At another point a 5 man squad assaulted my immobilized scout sentinel only to do zero damage, with my 1 attack I hit and wounded he fail his save lost combat, failed his leadership and run off the table. In the end I won 4-0.

Round 2 vs New S.O.B.
With the new white dwarf codex in hand my opponent took me apart from start to finish in this game. He did have a moment at the end where he felt sorry for me and tossed away his crushing victory by charging one of my blob units with 1 model that was contesting two objectives. If he hadn’t done that he would have won 6-0, but thanks to his generosity I only lost 2-1. He went on to win 2nd overall, very good player.

Round 3 vs Blood Angels
My opponent had never faced a blob army like mine before. He charged straight in with all three of his assault units thinking to wipe me out fast, but with stubborn LD9 with re-roll I took the first round assault with lots of damage and then started to kill everything with all the power weapon attacks I can kick out. It was a good day and I do hope to go back. I would like to see the format change to 1,500 points with 4 rounds, but that’s just me.

Game #5 vs John Johnston and his Player Choice winning Ork army.

Mission get more scoring units in your opponents deployment zone. After much carnage John wins 2-1. Best game of the weekend. Thanks John.

Over all I was 15th out of 52 players, with 2 wins & 3 loses.

Back from the 1st day of Da Grand Waaagh

It was a fun but long day.

Game #1 vs Mike & his Eldar

Four objectives mission

Mike had 7 Wave Serpents, 5 units of 6 Dire Avengers, 3 units of 10 Fire Dragons, 1 Farseer and an Avatar.

I was unable to kill all his counting troops and his Wave Serpents. In the end I did manage t only let him have 1 objective, but lost 0-1.

Game #2 vs Joe & his Eldar

Unlike Mike, Joe had 4 unis of 20 Guardians, 1 unit of 10 Howling Banshees in a WS, 1 unit of 5 Dark Reaper and 1 Avatar and 1 Wraith Lord.

This was a old mission of Victory points and Joe had a foot slogging Eldar list, I shot him to death as he charged across the Table. Win for me.

Game #3 vs Heath and his (wait for it...) Eldar

Kill point mission with Traders. You needed to get the trader off the the opponents table edge for and extra 2 KP's, if the Trader got killed it was worth 2 KP's.

Heath had: Seer Council, Farseer & 3 warlocks on bikes, Autarch on bike, 2x bike squad of 3, 2 Dire Avengers in WS, 1 Wrathguard in WS, 1 unit of Dark Reapers.

Heath did the smart thing and put his Trader in a WS and jetted across the table. Unfortunately his Seer Cancel with the Autarch in toe turbo boosted too close to one of my 40 man blocks and I was able to charge this unit on turn 1. Lost of shooting and death later.... I had 7 Kill Points to Heath's 5. Win for me.

Home now, going to bed soon. Day 2 starts at 8:30.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:-Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm;- Life isn't always fair; - And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, don't spend more than you can earn and adults, not children, are in charge.

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife Discretion, his daughter Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights,I Want It Now,Someone Else Is To Blame,I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, do nothing.

Well I travelled out to Endgames in Oakland for a little 40K with the mighty Necrons and got a good thumping.

Game #1 vs. Trent – Blood Angels
Fast fun game
Trent had lots of Tanks and I had lots of glancing hits. In the end I was phased out on the top of round 4. Best part of this game was Trent, fun player. Worst part, after going 6 for 13 on my WWB rolls in round 1, I then went 1 for 24 the rest of the game.

Lunch – Throw my dice away and bought new ones.

Game #2 vs. Steve – Bugs
Kill point game and Steve had 6 squishy units and 4 toughness 6 units. I killed all 6 of his squishy stuff and managed a 6-3 win. WWB rolls, 5 for 15 for the game

Game #3 vs. Ian – Orcs
I like Ian, I’ve enjoyed our games, but he missed phasing me out on the top of turn 2 as one of my units managed to flee from combat. Two rounds of running later and then I phase. Orcs vs. Necrons just don’t work. WWB rolls, 3 of 21 for the game.

I had to leave before the awards were given out but I heard Ian got best general, glad I can help Ian.

Next up Da Grand Waaagh, My IG are ready and so am I.

I've put away all the Goblins and Necrons as those armies are done enough to play up to 2,500 points.

I'm re-starting the Black Templar project I started last year, but fell away. I just need to recall how I painted the first two squads so I can match the new stuff.

Current Idea:

I'm going to get it all assembled and test out some ideas before I complete the paint job.

In the last two years at this event I placed 2nd and 4th, I am pushing for 1st this year. Of course I will be very disappointed when I'm not first, but a boy can dream, right?

After that I'll be going to the Battle Bunker in Antioch for there tournaments this year.

As we meet only once a month the first day of the tournament will be on November 19 and day two will be on December 17. Still working out the rules and plans, but it should be fun. Battle Bunker Games in Antioch has announced a 40K tournament each 2nd Saturday of the month. Along with many other tournaments and leagues it should be a good place to check out.

The Zero Comp crew run most (if not all) the Warhammer events.

Saturday Loren and I headed up to Great Escape Games for a Fantasy CoC tournament.

I had 3 fun games and took Best Overall with my Night Goblin army.

Loren took 3rd and Best Sports.

Next up is Celesticon.

No more CoC's in 2011 as the rest of the tournament dates conflict with our club game days.

This weekend is Ard Boyz and I'm going to try a crazy idea.

May IG army will NOT have any:

Plasma Cannons, Guns or Pistols

Melta Guns

In fact the biggest gun I will bring is the Strength 6 Grenade Launcher.

With over 160 foot troops, no tanks and no big guns I should lose each and every game right?

D&D Night

This weekend is D&D night, it will be good to get back into it. I missed last month so I'm ready for my Hafling Bard to sing once again.

On a Warhammer note, I'm starting to think about Ard Boyz next weekend. I have a thought for an army that I'm sure will lose, but will drive my opponents nuts.

For Celesticon, I have the trophies set, I'll see if I can get a picture up soon. They are cooler then I would have thought. Evil Goblin Daemon Skull.

The Bay Area Open

Hey Y’all

The weekend is done and I managed to get almost 9 hours of sleep last night so I’m feeling better today.

First up, the BAO itself was a blast.
I think Reece and his crew put on a fantastic GT and it almost all ran smoothly (from my prospective). The terrain was just right on the tables I played, food was avalible and cheap, it was a bit hot and the AC just could not keep up so water was important. Rule questions were answered fast and friendly. And the judges looked like and acted like they were having fun too.

The only suggestions I would make for next year, don’t use table clothes as battle areas, it is too easy to move and bunch up and that can change the position of models. Even the bare boards that were underneath the table cloths would have been better for that reason. Also I would suggest that Table #1 not always be the starting point for the top 2 players. This forces some people to play on the same table multiple times. I would suggest that on round 2 the top two players are on table 11, round 3 table 21, round 4 table 31, round 5 table 41, round 6 table 51 that way you don’t have as likely a chance of being on the same table over and over again. Just a thought.

Battle Reports:

Game #1, Dawn of War, Annihilation, Imperial Fist – Nick (Table 14)

Nick as a nice player, new to tournament play and 40K in general, was very easy going.

Nike chose to flank 3 Land Speeder Storm with scouts on board and deep strike 2 units of Terminators with Lysander in one and his Librarian in the other. Placing one scout unit in cover at the start of the game and his Vindicator came in on round 1. With my Officer of the fleet nick was only able to bring in 2 units in turn 2, both of which were destroyed quickly and in three 3 when Lysander + terminators came in it scattered onto my troops and the misshape roll put them back into reserves. Another scout unit came on and was destroyed along with the Vindicator that round. Round 4 Lysander came back on but again landed on my troops, this time I was allowed to position the drop point so I placed them about 24” away and let him run at me. The last Scout unit came on and then vanished in my turn along with most of the terminators in Lysander’s unit. Turn 5 I completed killing everything except Lysander and he was down to one wound. Game end Victory for me 11-0 kill points.

Game #2, Pitched Battle, Capture & Control, Eldar – Mike (Table 8)

I’ve played mike once before and he pasted me all over the walls back then. This time he had the same list, Avatar, 3 units of 10 Fire Dragons with DB Flamers in Wave Serpents and 5 units of 6 Dire Avengers in Wave Serpents for yes you guessed it 8 Wave serpents. Mike a nice guy and fun to play against and we had a good game. In the end it came down to some key moments, the first was after I hand charged 3 units of Dire Avengers and 3 Wave Serpents with one of my 50 man squads, he was close enough to his Avatar to be fearless and was able to still be in the fight after my assault. Then on his turn he moved his Wave Serpents out of the combat leaving most of my models not in the assault range which was good for him, but he then charged the combat with his Avatar giving me the chance to pile in once again and bring all my attacks to bear. In the end he still head me up that round so I couldn’t kill his last troop unit in my turn and he was able to get into a Wave Serpent and fly back to his objective. I still had to kill 3 more wave serpents in 2 turns to hold my objective, I was able to do so but only because the game went 7 turns. If not Mike would have won the game, so Draw on a 1-1 objective tie.

Game #3, Dawn of War, Seize Ground (5 objectives), Blood Angels – Steve (Table 8)

As luck would have it Steve was another fun player so I was having a good time so far. His force included Mephiston, Sanguinary Priest, 4x Assault squad in Razorback, 2 Baal Predators and 3x units of Devastators with 4 missile launchers each. This game was about me trying to stop his tanks while getting hit with 12 blast templates each round. I did a good job on his tanks and I did manage to immobilize or destroy all of them but victory was lost to me when I held 3 objective to his 1 and decided to take one of my units holding an objective and charging his Assault unit, that was a very bad idea as I lost the assault and gave Steve the ability to spread out his unit and hold two objectives for a draw. 2-2 objective tie

Game #4, Spearhead, Capture & Control, Salamanders – Kelly (Table, yep you guessed it, 8)

My luck with opponents was still running good as Kelly was a very relaxed player and we had a very fun game. His army: Vulkan, Librarian, 2x Tactical Squads in Rhinos, Scout Squad, 2x Terminator Squads in Land Raiders (1 a redeemer). I started the game playing for a draw as it was my experience that this type of game is near a good idea for my army to try and win. But sometimes the Dragon wins and this time was one of those times. After his realization that I can kill 6 terminators in one round with just flashlight fire with some heavy bolters added in, he went on the defensive and allowed me to charge across the table and get into range of his objective and pull of the unit there into a combat. Luckily the game ended on turn 5, for in turn 6 he was going to move another unit on the objective and it would have been a tie again. Win 1-0 objective.

Game #5, Spearhead, Annihilation, Orks – Levi (Table 6)

Here we go, my not so favorite army to play against. I knew it had to happen at some point, but it was here at last, Orks. Levi was once again a fun and easy going player. Army: Ghazghkull, Big Mek with Kustom force field, unit of 8 nobs with all different outfits, 2x units of 18 boys + nob, 19 gretchens + runtherd, 2x Defkopters, 3x Battle Wagons with Deffrollas, 3x units of 5 lootas.
This was the first time any rule questions came up during a game and as no TO was in sight (no I didn’t go looking for one, I didn’t care enough to) we just played on and had fun. Later when a TO came by and we asked the rule question and we found out the correct answer, so Levi got a very small bonus for one round of combat that wouldn’t have changed anything. (do units with re-rolls to hit on the charge get to re-roll when placing Melta Bombs? We played as no so my 3 MB didn’t hit when needing a 6 to hit but the ruling said you do get re-rolls.) This was a bloody game as I tried to out maneuver Levi and get the charge on the orks. Levi said he didn’t have much experience with my type army and was having a difficult time figuring out what to do against me. I did manage to destroy one of his Battle Wagons but the other two were proving to be a bit harder to kill. We danced for 3 turns killing small units here and there before Levi committed to an assault that brought the Nob squad into combat The fight was long and bloody but Levi made an error when he tossed in another squad of or boys into the Nob fight because that allowed me to assault those boys with my other unit of 50 girls with Furious Charge and re-rolls to hit. With the damage done I did lose one of my big units but took out both his nob unit and a boyz unit. With only 15 minutes left I asked if he wanted to do round 6, he said yes and tried to Deathrolla my one remaining squad with both his Battle Wagons but I death and gloried the first one with a melta bomb and blow it up and before we can do the second one he asked if we can just not do round 6 as we were almost out of time and it wouldn’t be fair to me to not get my round 6 in if we ran out of time. As I had already asked if we should call the game I was very much OK with this. We added up the scores, tie 7-7 kill points. When we figured this out Levi conceded the game and game we the win. I took the win; I’m not the big of a man to turn down a victory in a victory only counts tournament. Also his Greatchen unit never came on the table as Levi forgot about them so they should count in Kill Points for an 8-7 win.

Game #6, Pitched Battle, Seize Ground (3 objectives), Orks – Nathan (Table 3) so I’m in the top 6 at this point)

Oh god, another ork list. Almost the exact same list except no Deathrollas on the battle wagons and 8 more lootas then Levi had. Nathan another fun player is a great tactician. Instead of rolling forward to assault me he sat back and shot as tow of the three objective ended up on his side of the table I had no choice but to charge into the orks. I think I could have pulled off a draw if my plans worked out but at a critical moment when I was set up to charge his unit of lootas and then be in cover for the ork counter charge while my second unit was close back to counter the counter charge I had a brain melt down and shot the loota squad to death. What the hell was I thinking? This left me open for his 3 big units to charge my 2 big units in the open. I would have eventually ground them down and he me but at that point it didn’t matter as his Gretchens held one objective and all my counting units where in combat with all his other counting units so after 6 turns I conceded as neither of us were going to win those combats in the next round. Lose 1-0 objectives

Nathan went on to place 2nd overall, Great job!

Round #7, Spearhead, Annihilation, Tyranids – Julian (Table 6)

Army: Swarnlord + 2 Tyrant Guard, Ymergl Genestealers, Hiveguard, Zoanthrops, 2x units of termagants, 2x Tervigon, genestealers, Tyrannofex. After 6 fun and enjoyable games you just knew it couldn’t last. I’ve played Julian once before at Hard Boyz back in 2008. In that game he should have kicked my butt with his orks, but my Chaos Plague Marines just would not fail any saves. So this was a change for a bit of revenge on me for that game so long ago. Now before you think I don’t like Julian stop it, he is a good kid and I’m sure we will have many fun games in the future. That being said we didn’t talk about terrain before the game started (my fault) like I had done with all my other opponents and when it came time for me to move off the big hill I was on it became difficult terrain where I had been playing all my games as easy hill not giving cover so I was in a terrible position and would have set up very differently for the game. After that I started to let little problems get the best of me and after some really bad dice and some rules question that just didn’t sit with me well (and all of which are perfectly correct and I was just being an a…) I got up and walked away after turn 3 conceding the game. After about 20 minutes I settled down and realized just how big an A..H… I was being and talk with Julian about it. He accepted my apology and we turned in our results. Lose for me, score was never taken.

In the end I still feel like an A..H… for that last game, I mean really what was I thinking, oh well.

With 3 wins, 2 draws and 2 looses I think I still placed in the top 20 (out of 78 players) but I’ll have to wait for the results to be posted on line to be sure.

Next year I will not lose my cool.

The Big Weekend is here

And the Bay Area Open starts in the morning and I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.
Given my lackluster performance this last Sunday I’m looking to win more games than I loose. I’ll call that a good weekend of games. The Bay Area Open (BAO) is 7 games over 2 days, this will be the most games I’ve ever played in a tournament. It could also be the largest group of players in a tournament (approx 128) I’ve ever been to. (I was at the 2008 Baltimore GT with 110 players)

I'm beat

After two days with 2 tournaments I was beaten and tired.

On Saturday I took my Necrons to Great Escape Games with 61 other players.

Game #1 - Draw with main personal objective for me vs Tyranids 14-10
Kevin was a fun opponent and he had a bunch of Gene Stealer's. In the end we both had 1 objective with two models on them. I still have 3 other squads and he only had those two models, but after 7 turns the game ended. If the game ended on round 5 or 6 I would have lost as Kevin was still contesting my objective.

Game #2 - Win with both personal objectives for me vs Space Marines 21-5
Kevin (yes, 2 Kevin's in a row) was a now player and we took the time to work out some of the basic rules of the game. He was a fun player but after 5 tournament all he had left was 1 drop pod and I had lost 5 models. I held 3 of 4 objective. (I only have 3 counting units in my army)

Game #3 - Win with both personal objectives for me vs Blood Angels 21-9
Mike was my best game of the day. His list was super tough and if it wasn't for some really bad dice for Mike he should have won I think. When his stuff that is deep striking doesn't come on till turn 3 and turn 4 I can focus fire on the one or two units on the table and not split my fire over all the stuff. Also a turn 5 roll of 1 with his Land Raider going over terrain killed his last hope to kill my last unit and phase my army. Kill points 8-6.

At the end of the day I placed 7 out of 62 and won 2nd best general.

Day #2 at Endgame in Oakland

First, the warm-up thing was just what I needed to remember how to run my IG. I had 3 great opponents and it was a very fun and easy going day.

There wasn't much in the way of a format, with only 8 players it was winner plays winner each round. And for each round, each game was rolled out of the book. And by each game I mean each pairings of players rolled their own mission so each table could have had a different mission. With no conformity it was just a play and have fun day.

Game #1 vs Dark Angels, Pitched Battle, 4 objectives.

I won handily tabling my opponent in 4 rounds. Not much learned in this game except that I can kill turbo boosting bikers with flashlights if the bikes are in 12" range.

Game #2 vs Wolves, Spear Head, Camp objectives.

While I could of very easily sat back and gone for the easy tie I tried to win this game by sending one of my Platoon squads forward on a dead run to try and contest my opponents objectives. A few things I learned along the way, Space Wolves hit back very hard. I'll have to be more careful next time.
In the end I had a 2 man squad on my objective for my opponents last turn (bottom of 5) that went to ground (+2 cover per the order "Incoming!) for a 2+ cover save. After saving against 2 Missile launchers, 2 Lascannons and 2 heavy bolters the near by drop pod fired it's Storm bolter, hitting twice, wounding twice and yes you guessed it I failed both 2+ saves to lose the game. In all fairness I was taking a lot of risks to see if I can capture both objectives in a spearhead game, but it seems unlikely unless my opponent is really new at the game.

Game #3 vs Ork, Pitched Battle, Kill Points.

I don't know what I was thinking when I set up my stuff but as I know I was going 2nd I should have deployed very differently. He had 2 battle wagons full of Nobs and other stuff. If I had put my Lascannon on the hills I would have had at least 1 shot and possible 2 shots at them, but as it was I hid behind the hills giving my no shots. When he charged my 28 power weapon attacks (4 to hit, 5 to wound) did zero damage. I took 3 of his 4 squads down to 1 model each and did manager to blow up both battle tanks along with his Kill Kans, but my set up hand me hamstrung for the entire game. In the end I lost my entire force (10 kill points) and I only managed the get 8 of his 16.

So after 1 win a 2 not wins I took the day as a learning experience and accepted the fun time I had.

One very interesting thing I did learn is that my command can kill 3 killer kans in one round in hth combat.

I'm looking forward to this weekend, I'll let you know how I do.

Saturday I'll be heading up to Great Escape Games for the CoC 40K tournament. Once again I'll be taking my trusty Necrons and with 2,000 points of metal happiness I should win a game or two.

On Sunday, in a rare double header, I'll be taking my Imperial Guard to End Games in Oakland for a 1,850 point tournament as a warm up to next weekends Bay Area Open.

So, 2 days and 2 tournaments, should be fun. I'll let you know how I did.

Not much going on on the Warhammer side of life. My next adventure is the CoC 40K tournament on 7/23. I need to paint up a few Necrons, but all is ready.

On the Family side of life we will be going to Santa Cruz & the Monterrey Bay Aquarium this weekend for some well deserved time off. Most of the kids are looking forward to spending this time with the family.

After Quake

Another great weekend of games in the City.

Friday night Warbands I had 2 wins and 1 lose, placed 4th of 10 players.

For the Quake I beat two Dwarf armies but lost to a Tomb Kings, Daemons & Dark Elf armies for a 23 record. Placed 58th out of 92.

Next up is a CoC tournament on 7/23 and then the Bay Area Open on the 30-31.

I'll be running Necrons at the CoC and IG at the BaO.

Well we are just a few days from the QCR. I'm just about ready, still need to complete 12 bowmen and fix some damaged items, but I'll be ready in time.

The Goblins of Night should do well, my goal is to have 3 wins in 5 games.

I'll also be playing in the Warbands tournament Friday night and I'll see how I do.

So with 3 days, 8 games I should have lots to tell you next week.

This last Saturday our club held this years Tank Races. It went over fairly well but the rules do need to be fixed a bit. I had thought we could get a game in in about 1 hour, but after 3 hours we just called the game with a third of the course still to run. More work on the rules before I run this at a con.

Fathers Day was a blast. Lunch & a movie with the kids and then another movie that evening with my lovely wife, a perfect Sunday if you ask me.

Tank Race!

Lazy day at home. Ariel and I will get started on her new army display board and get some Warband games under our belts for the upcoming Quake City Rumble Warbands tournament.

Next week we'll be having the Galactic 40,000 Tank Race. If you ever wanted to stop by the Vet's where are club, the Powers of the North, meets and play some games now is the time. Tank Race is fun and enjoyable in a pretzel and beer type game. You don't really need to know the rules they are simple.

Kubla Con

I had a very fun day of games and won two vs Dark Eldar and a draw vs Tyranids.

Overall I think I was 5th.

I was mostly happy with my performance, but I can improve my Kill Point abilities.

Next up is the Quake City Rumble at the end of the month. I found I still need to paint 12 more Night Goblins so I'll be doing that this weekend.

Also Ariel and I are trying to figure out a good Wood Elf list for her to run. These new 8th edition rules are making it very hard to use the Woodies.

On the Family side today is the last day of school for the kids so summer time is here.

SAWS Results

Hey Y'all

Well I'm back from the SAWS Challenge and I did have a mostly fun weekend.

I really enjoy this GT, the venue is great and hotels are very close by.

Game 1 vs Daemon
I lost this game, he had a -2 leadership banner and my entire army just ran off the table after the first fight.

Game 2 vs Dark Elf
I had this game won, but at the bottom of round 6 I chose to flee with multiple units instead of just loosing 1 night goblin shamen. Normally this is a good idea as fleeing units don't count as lost units in 8th edition, but I forgot to read the scenario special rules where fleeing units count for have their value at the end of the game. This brought the game to a draw.

Game 3 vs Dark Elf again
My first true victory of the weekend. And a thumping good one for me.

Game 4 vs Beastmen
Started off Sunday morning with another win. My Mangler Squig took center stage in this game. In turn 3 I was 15+" away from my opponents flank, if I can roll high enough I would go through all his units to the other side of the table. Picked up 3 dice and rolled...17!

Game 5 vs Daemons again
Another game vs a -2 leadership banner. Game was over in round 3 as all I had left was my stone thrower.

In the end I had 3 great opponents, 1 so-so and 1 guy who needed cheese to go with his whining.

My comp took a hit as I would expect from fielding 15 fanatics but my sportsmanship was 27 out of 30 possible. There were 4 other players who scored 28 sports and no one scored 29 or 30 so I figure that's really good for me.

My paint was so-so, but above the average score line.

Not sure what I can do about the -2 leadership banner. Night Goblins already have a low leadership and a -2 is just killing me. To bad I don't have a spell I can pick out characters from units.

Oh well, next up KublaCon.

1 week till SAWS

And I'm still working on my Night Goblins. I should have them done by Saturday, cross my fingers.

I took them to Endgames this last Thursday night for a test drive with the Leadership 2 folks, took on a VC army and won but his die rolls were bad and mine were very good. I past all my Leadership tests all game long, with Night Goblins!

I'm looking forward to the SAWS Challenge and I think I'll do OK, I hope to have at lest 2 wins in 5 games.

I will be changing my list from SAWS to the QCR as the comp system is very different. I'll drop a unit o Night Goblins and add another Pump Wagon, change the Night Goblin War bosses to Goblin War bosses, drop the Flaming Banner for a Poison Banner and possibly add another Mangler Squig and 10 more bowmen.

Once that is done I'll be starting on my Warriors of Chaos army.

Aftermath CoC

It was a small turn out for the CoC Saturday. As it was the day before Easter many folks had family commitments this weekend.

A few things I learned:

Animosity before random movement

Night Goblin Shamen are -2 comp each (at the CoC) and Orc Shamen are not

I can't deal with a shooty army in buildings

Doom Divers suck at hurting war machines

Poison attacks are great against war machines

At the end of the day I had 1 win and 2 loses. Win vs Dwarves, very close lose vs Ogre Kingdoms and a crushing defeat vs High Elfs.

I took 2nd best sport but overall not so good as my army only scored 6 on paint. Next time when I bring Orc Shamen instead of Night Goblins and have a fully painted army I'll have 18 more points I didn't have Saturday and place in the top 5.

Learning day for me.

Well we are all rested and ready to start another week of painting to get ready for the SAWS GT in May. I'll be going to the Fantasy CoC this coming Saturday and testing my list, the Goblins of Night, and see if I can handle them. So far I've learned a lot in test games with our club. I'll not have them completely painted for this weekend so winning best overall is out of the question, I'll hope for best sport.

Family stuff:
Chris has started Baseball and so far his team hasn't lost a game being 7-0. Chris has been Pitcher, Catcher, Center Field and Short Stop and is doing a great job.

Nate has signed up for Soccer again and looking forward to the new season.

Ariel, Natasha & Joseph are going to be baptised on Easter Sunday, we are looking froward to a great Easter this year.

It looks like a sad announcement that Kubla Con will be running it's 40K & Fantasy tournaments on the same day.

This of course means that I'll not have a chance to play in both tournaments.

Rules and Regulations

Warhammer 40K tournament will be on Saturday September 3, 2011
Army Size: 1,500 points.
Special Characters are allowed
All missions will be straight out of the rule book. Expect one of each Mission type and one of each deployment type.
Allies: No Allies of any kind will be allowed in your army.

Warhammer Fantasy tournament will be on Sunday September 4, 2011
Army Size: 2,500 points
Special Characters are NOT allowed. Also, we are banning the use of these magic items: Book of Hoeth, Folding Fortress & Power Scroll.
All missions will be straight out of the rule book. I will be using three of the first five missions available (i.e. not Watchtower mission).
Terrain: No mysterious terrain will be in use.

Standard rules for both tournaments:

Signing up: We have a cap of 24 players in each tournament; To reserve a spot you must register for the Con first, and then send me an e-mail letting me know you wish to play in which tournament. I will take them on a first come first reserve basis. If we hit are max early I’ll see if we can get more tables and terrain to expand the tournament if space is available.

Army Painting: All models in your army must be painted to table top standard. This means that you need to have 3 different colors on each model and the bases need to be painted or flocked in some way. Unpainted or part painted models will be removed from play as it’s just uncool to play with unpainted stuff.

WYSIWYG: Also known as “what you see is what you get”. Each model should be a fair representation of what it should be. We all love cool conversations and having a bunch of undead Halflings as zombies is very cool, but if I can’t figure out what a Dwarf with a Lascannon is doing in a high elf army it just isn’t going to be allowed. If you are even the slightest worried about your models send me a picture and get it pre approved.

Army Book & Codex: All current Army Books & Codex are allowed. You may only use units from your Army Book or Codex, nothing else will be allowed.

What you need: Please bring 5 copies of your army list, one for you, one for me and one for each of your opponents to keep. All of you have the capability to print out army lists so please don’t scrawl them in pencil with bad math. All army lists are due to me by August 15th. I will accept excel, word, PDF & HTML format. Please send to docdragonis@yahoo.com

You also need to bring all game supply stuff: Dice (not loaded), pencil/pen, paper, Templates, tape measure, scatter dice, Army Book, Rule Book, FAQ’s about your army and the rule book and anything else you need for your army.

Dice: Very important! Please don’t bring dice with symbols on them. And if you are unwilling to allow your opponent to use your special, special dice then don’t bring those either. At any time during the game your opponent may ask to use your dice and you will allow them to do so.

Event Schedule each day:
Set-up: 7:30am
Check in: 8:00am to 8:45am
Round 1: 9:00am to 11:30am
Lunch & Coolness Voting: 11:30am to 12:30pm
Round 2: 12:45pm to 3:15pm
Round 3: 3:30pm to 6:00pm
Awards: 6:15pm – 6:30pm

Scoring:
Olympian: Total possible of 3-15
Win = 5, Draw = 3, Lose = 1
For 40K we will not be using Victory points.
For Fantasy a Draw is defined as a difference in Victory Points of 250 or less.

Awesomeness: Total possible of 0-9
Everyone wants an awesome game. Everyone thinks they are awesome players. The reality is sometimes less than that. At the end of the tournament you will be asked to rank your games Awesomeness level. There are four levels:
Totally the most Awesome game: 3 points
That was a Most Awesome game: 2 points
That was an Awesome game, just not as Awesome as my other games: 1 point
Well, hmm, OK, I played a game, I hope next time it will be Awesome: 0 points.
You may only put one of your opponents in each slot. This will allow you to rank opponents as you wish. If you didn’t have a Totally Awesome game then you rank your opponents 2,1,0 if you had two Awesome games and one not, you can do 3,2,0. Or course you can always have the standard 3,2,1 great day of gaming. Now I understand that it is possible to have 3 “Totally the most Awesome game” that day, but you still need to rank them.

Coolness: Total Possible 0-3
After round 1 you will set up your army for Coolness voting. Each player with pick the top 3 coolest army’s in the tournament. First Place vote = 3, second place vote = 2 and a third place vote = 1. I’ll add up all the scores and the First Place overall winner will get 3 Coolness Points, the 2nd place winner will get 2 Coolness Points and the third place winner will get 1 Coolness points. These Coolness points will be added to your overall total for the tournament. In the event of a tie each player in his/her position for coolness votes will earn that places Coolness points. i.e. If two players have 23 Coolness votes, and one has 22 and another has 21 then the two first place winners will get the 3 Coolness points while then 2nd & 3rd will still get 2 & 1 respectively.

Now, what is a Cool army? Glad you asked. There isn’t just one reason to pick a cool army; it can be any number of things like how great the army is painted or how cool the display board works to tell the theme of the army. The design of the army may make you think it just total cool. In the end this is up to each individual on what they thing is Way Cool.

D’oh points: -1 each
D’oh points are given by me, the judge, to players who just don’t get it. Really how hard is it to turn in a list by August 15, 2011. If you can’t do this simple thing then you’re going to get a D’oh point. If you didn’t bring a readable list for each of your opponents you’re going to get more D’oh points. If you can’t turn in your Awesomeness and Coolness voting forms you’ll get more D’oh points. I’m sure there will be other reasons that I’ll make up as I go along.

So without any D’oh points; this means you can earn between 3 and 27 Tournament points.

Awards:
Lord God King Bookoo: Highest Tournament Point total. (tie – Olympian, tie – Awesomeness, tie – Coolness, tie – Drinking contest that night at the Bar)
Mr. (or Ms.) Olympian: Most Olympian Points. (tie – Awesomeness, tie – Coolness)
Mr. (or Ms.) Awesome: Most Awesomeness Points. (tie – Olympian, tie – Coolness)
Mr. (or Ms.) Coolness: Most Coolness Points. (tie – Awesomeness, tie – Olympian)
Other awards may or may not be given out during each tournament just for random acts of Awesomeness as judged by the judge.

The Judge and his Style:

Hey Y’all
Most of you know me and those that don’t, well you’ll learn. I’m an easy going judge who will not get involved in a game unless I’m asked. I am not your baby sitter, and while I’m old enough to be your dad I am not your dad, (well unless of course I am you dad) and you as mostly grown men and women can play nice and friendly I would think. For those of you who wish to ruin a game or two trying to be a D-bag I have no problems bouncing you from my tournament. We are all here to have fun and enjoy the day. You will not win hundreds or thousands of dollars at my tournaments so don’t act like you will.

What to do if a rules problem comes up. Look it up first, check the GW FAQ’s, ask the table next to you and then call me over if you’re still unsure. I will make a decision fast so you can get back to the game. Do not argue with me. I know it’s hard to believe but I don’t know all the rules and yes, I do get them wrong once in a while (yes I’m as stunned as you are about that), but I make decisions fast so that game isn’t slowed down by the judge looking up every little thing, you should have done that before you asked me.

In the end we all want fun. I will do my best to allow you all the fun you need.

A new record!

Saturday morning, with two of my daughters and a good friend we headed over to Great Escape Games for a 2,000 point Fantasy tournament. I brought a Night Goblin army about half painted so I wasn't in the running for best overall from the start.

Game #1 vs Cary & his Warriors of Chaos army

I set up thinking of getting killed, but in the end I won. Not sure how or why really. Cary forgot to re-roll wounds the first time he attacked with his Plague Bearers and I was able to stay in combat with him, that might have been it or the fact I was rolling out of my mind, but in any event Cary was a good sport and a fun game.
Win 20-10

Game #2 vs Mark and his Lizardmen

Mark runs the SAWS GT and is a smart fun player. I was able to keep his toad lord in check magically for the first 5 rounds, but round 6 saw what a Slann is capable of. I did manage to hold an objective and that allowed me to get a draw. Mark got my best player vote for the day.

Bottle neck mission vs Dwarf stone throwers on the back edge of the table makes for a interesting game.

In the end I had a fun day. My friend, who took my Daemon army for his first tournament experience went 2 & 1 and placed 9th. I was 22nd just 1 point above my Daughter at 23rd.

Death of a Character

Hey Y'all

Well the weekend is over and I'm mostly recovered. Saturday morning was the Powers of the North club 40K league. We had 7 players and I think a total of 7 games played. I got in 3 games, 2 Fantasy & 1 40K.

In the evening went to our D&D game were my Halfling Mage was the first to die in the night, fallowed closely by the rest of the party. New D&D game starts next month.

Sunday I did make it to DunDraCon to play in the Warhammer Fantasy tournament. I took a Dwarf gun line, 4 units of 20 thunders, 2 units of 20 minors, 3 flaming bolt throwers and a Runelord with Anvil.

Lost the fist game to VC, won the next two vs WOC & Empire. Both wins were by the skin of my teeth. I took a sportsmanship hit, most likely because I had a gun line, and a paint hit, not sure why really, but had a blast all day.

This weekend I'll be going to Great Escape games for a another Fantasy tournament. I'll have my unpainted Orc & Goblin army. Ariel will have her Wood Elf army and my friend Loren will be playing Daemons for his first Fantasy tournament ever.

Hey Y'all

It's the morning before I start a full-on game weekend.

9am: 40K league at the Cotati Vet's with the Powers of the North game club. I hope to get in two or three games.

After that tonight is D&D night! Will my Halfling Mage win the day? Stay tuned and find out.

Then after a few hours of sleep I'll be off to DunDraCon for a Warhammer Fantasy tournament using my wife's trusty Dwarves.

I'll let you know all that happened next week.

Get that paint brush moving!

Hey Y'all

If you've read any of my older posts you'll see that I've started and stop several armies of the last 8 months. I always seem to pick and army that is going to get a new army book or find one that will get comp-hosed at the Contest of Champions.

So, I made a commitment with myself, damn the torpedo's, full speed ahead!

To that end here is what hope to do starting tonight.

Finnish my Necron Army by the end of March. This shouldn't be too hard as I've only got 15 models to paint and then do the basing.

At that point the new Orc & Goblin book will be out and I can start on the Night Goblin army. This army has to potential of having over 300 models so it will be several months in the painting.

Once that is done I will get back to the Black Templar I started in the beginning of 2009. This will be a nice change after all those Night Goblins. With a model count of about 60 troops and 6 tanks.

Then it will be back to my Dragon Ogre army (warriors of chaos). This was a concept army that tanked when the new army book came out. But, as I have all the models I will get it done even if it will never win a game or see a tournament for comp reasons. Model count about 75 if all goes well.

That should then clear my painting desk. I also pledge no to buy a new army until these 4 are done.

That is my pledge.

CelestiCon

After being on the side-lines for over 6 months I get back into the game.

This year I have been asked to run the Warhammer tournaments at CelestiCon. This will be the first year that CelestiCon will be on Labor Day weekend in September, but I think the move from October to September will be good for the con and give those of us looking for a fun place to play that weekend.

So far the only thing that is for sure, Warhammer 40K will be on Saturday & Warhammer Fantasy will be on Sunday. The rest will come in time. Keep your eyes here for more information or to the CelestiCon web site.

New Comp is up

Well the new comp system is up for the Contest of Champions Warhammer Tournaments at Great Escape Games in Sacramento. After reading all the rules I think I'll be using my Dwarfs for the February Fantasy Tournaments. I've put off working on the O&G list as I'm waiting for the new Army book to come out.

I'm still working on the Necrons for 40K even though I'll be taking a comp hit.

Ariel and my friend Loren will be going with me to Great Escape Games on 2/26 for the Fantasy tournament so I think it will be fun. This will be Loren's first Fantasy tournament.

On a personal note, teeth are expensive to fix.....

Hey Y'all

Not much going on, going to a board game night this Saturday other then that nothing on the table until the Power of the North league on the 19th then it's Fantasy tournament on the 26. The life starts to get fun on the game side again.

Ariel was the lay reading this last Sunday, she did a great job!

As for me, the dentist is not very happy with me, I was tortured today for a couple of hours and I need to go back again on Monday for more torture. After all that I need to get 6 crowns, and not the kingly type either.

The other kids are doing fine and I hope to have some fun during the Easter Vacation with them in April.

Yippee!

The CoC tournaments have been moved around a bit and it looks like I will get to play in 6 of the 12 tournaments this year.

Now that I can go I've taken a look at the 40K comp (fantasy not posted yet) and found that running my Necrons will take a big comp hit. I may still use them, but I'm just not going to do very well in the tournaments. I can still take my CSM's, SOB or Tyranids and get perfect comp easy with strong army's. Well I'll be thinking about it over the next couple of months. The next 40K tournament is in March.

I'll be going to the Fantasy one in February and hope to play goblins.

I'm signed up for the QCR & SAWS GT's and am ready to sign up for the Kubla Con warhammer tournaments again. I'm going to really try and place top 5 in both Fantasy & 40K this year at Kubla Con.

Powers of the North League

Is up and running.

So far we've had 9 players play in 8 games.

With sign-up we have a total of 19 players, but 8 of those can only play on even months.

It's a good start. I hope to keep it going all year.

I was unable to play as my wife and I had a class to attend Saturday.

I did get my monthly D&D game in Saturday night. We lost all our characters except mine, I talked my way out of getting killed. Two of use were resurrected, but the other two players are working up new characters.

Sara bought the new 4th edition Talisman game and hope to play it today. And Ariel and I are going to try and get in a warhammer game to test out a new idea for her Wood Elf army.

All in all the family is doing good. Like all families we do have our issues, but for the most part it gets worked out and love settles over our home once again, well as much love as 4 teenagers will allow. ;-)

I don't have anything scheduled for the next couple of weeks so I'll post when I have something for y'all. Until then have fun and game hard.

GT's are fun

In just 2 days I've received info on two GT's I will attend.

The first on May 13-15 is the SAWS Challenge, Fantasy GT

And after that will be the Quake City Rumble on June 24-26, also a Fantasy GT.

Both have been fun in the past and I look forward to some good competition again this year.

Hey Y'all

Not much going on, still recovering from the holidays. Very little in the gaming world. Our 40K football league looks like we'll have 8 players so starting this Saturday that should get going, and after that our 2nd D&D game using the new 4th edition rules.

No tournaments in sight for me, it could be May before I get to one, but that may change I'll have to wait and see.

On the home front, Nate completed his Soccer season with a 2 draw, 1 lose showing in the state cup. He had a fun year and now it's time for a rest.

Sara bought a new cat, Gracie, she is getting use to the home. Dragon (older male cat) is getting use to a younger cat in the house.

Other then that just normal everyday family stuff.

Starting January 15, 2011 the Powers of the North game club will be hosting a Warhammer 40K League.

Currently we have 7 players, with room for up to 9 more.

This will be a year long league with playoffs the last couple of months.

The Powers of the North game club meets each 3rd Saturday of each month at the Veterans Hall at 8505 Park Ave, Cotati, CA, 94928.

As we recover from Christmas & Anniversary we look to this Friday Night and New Years Eve! Well it will be mostly quiet at the Dragon's Lair. It's possible no one will be awake come midnight.

First game of the new year is Saturday night when my mates and I get together for some board games. Not sure when my first Warhammer tournament will be in 2011, but you'll hear about it here as soon as I know about it.

Well it looks like my regular tournament outlet at Great Escape Games will be a no go for me in 2011. Becuase of buisness reasons the tournament dates have been moved from the 4th Saturday each month to the 3rd Saturday each month. This directly interfears with my D&D game night and our clubs game day.

I am sad for the change, but like all things I will overcome. I'll still be hitting as many tournaments as possible in this new year while jugling work, family & life.

I'm looking into re-starting some type of monthly event at the Vet's hall (our clubs meeting room) for 2011. About mid 2009 I had to stop running events, and I've only been 3 or 4 times in the last 18 months. But looking ahead I find my time has shifted. Still not sure, but I'm looking and chatting with a few club mates to see if there is an interest.

Some of you may have noticed a marked decline in my posts of late. This is mostly do to the season, work & family. Fear not, I am still hear and still playing games.

Contest of Champions - Victory is mine

So Saturday I headed up to Sacramento for the final Contest of Champions Warhammer Fantasy Tournament at Great Escape Games. After 3 games I had a 2 win, 1 draw record. I'm not sure what place I ended up in, still don't have the result sheet, but I won the Best Sportsmanship award. Obviously my opponents had really, really crappy other games to vote for me.

The Contest of Champions is a year long event of 6 tournaments, your best 4 tournament scores are compared to all the other players and if your the highest, you are the champion. I was somewhat surprised to hear my name spoken for the Grand Champion. I started off the year missing the first tournament and brought a VC army that scored a crappy 4 out of 40 for the second tournament. While it is true I took my wife's trusty Dwarfs to the last four tournaments, placing in the top 3 in three of those (not sure yet about this last one), non the less I was surprise I took the best overall.

Thanks to all my opponents I've had, and I hope to repeat for next year with Orcs & Goblins.

Fantasy:

Dark Elf: 2 wins, 1 lose - 1 Tournament
Vampire Counts: 5 wins, 6 loses - 3 Tournaments

Total for the year:
34 Wins, 9 Draws, 22 Loses in 19 Tournaments.

For 2011 I hope to use Necrons for 40K & Orc & Goblins for Fantasy most of the time.

Tis the Season

Hey Y'all

The Holiday Season is here and we are in full swing around the Dragon's Lair. All my little dragons are going here and there trying to be good in hopes of big rewards later this month.

Of course it is also the cold season and I've got a good one.

Fear not, I shall be back on the battle field soon.

The last tournament of the year for me is coming up this Saturday at Great Escape Games. It is a Fantasy 2,999 point tournament and I'll be taking the trusty Dwarves once again. I picked up two units of minors to go with my standard army and should have some fun with them.

Other gaming stuff, we completed my AD&D 1st edition game with my local mates and one of them will be starting a 4th edition campaign this month. I look forward to playing again instead of running the campaign.

Well, that wasn't fun.

Me and my son Joseph took off early in the morning yesterday to head to Gamers Guild in Antioch for a small 40K no-comp tournament. It was the first time I've been to this store.

All the info I had said the tournament started at 10:30am. We arrived at 10:15 and no one was there except 3 other players waiting out side. At about 11am a few more players arrived but still no one for the store. Most of the other players left and so did we about 11:15am. I found out this morning that the tournament started at 12:15 and had 4 players.

I've talked with a friend of mine who recomended the tournament to me and I think I will give them one more try if the comunication gets better.

All that being said; after we left we drove over to Endgame in Oakland and got a pick-up game with the 40K Fight Club folks. We got home about 5pm and enjoyed an evening watching Tombstone & eating Carl's Jr burgers.

Up this morning at 6am, went to the Black Bear with Sara for a romatic breackfest and then off to shop for Santa. I hope the kids like their gifts.

Next Tournament - No Comp

Gamers Guilde in Antioch is running a 2,000 pt 40K tournament Saturday.

I got 3 games in with my Necron force over the weekend.

Game 1 vs Tau = Big win for me

Game 2 vs Gray Knights = Draw

Game 3 vs Blood Angels = Lose (but I know what I did wrong and could have easily won the game)

I started taking a Monolith for the first time and my results are getting better.

I should be ready by January.

Hey Y'all

This weekend I'll be spending some time with the local guys testing out my Necron & Orc & Goblin armies for next year. After that an evening with friends for board games.

Last week after the CoC tournament Great Escape Games held a forum to talk about next year's tournaments. After 2+ hours of "talk" I'm not sure what will happen next year, but I look forward to it. Gary, Sirus & Mark will do a great job I'm sure. I just hope it's all worked out soon as I would like to figure out the Comp and get my army set.

Family life is good. Sara and the kids are off next week, but I will still work all week but Thursday. Played Ticket to Ride with 3 of the kids last night and we had a fun time.
